Sliding Handle

Patent 690,829 Issued Jan. 7, 1902

L – 8-1/8” extended, 6-6/7” compressed. PAT. PENDING on the handle. The handle splits in half lengthwise and is held together with a rivet. This tool is a pre patent of the one shown below.

L – 11-1/2” extended, 8-3/4” compressed. PAT 1-7-1902 is on the handle. The handle splits in half lengthwise and is held together with a wire wrapped around the center of the handle and looped back into an indent on two sides of the handle. See small picture.

Patent 23,969 Issued May 10,1895

These three picks have the same shape handle but three different manufacturing processes for inserting and retaining the pick.

L =12-1/2” extended and 7-3/4” closed. A 4-3/4” stroke. A hole through the handle just below the flatten knob on the top of the handle. This allows access to the top end of the pick shaft during the manufacturing process to flatten/pinch the heated top end of the pick shaft. This process held the pick in the handle. No special markings

Coiled Spring in the Handle

L = 8-1/8” extended, 6-3/8 compressed. A 1-3/4’ stroke. PERFECTION, MOSSBERG PRESSED STEEL CORP. ATTLEBORO, MASS. USA stamped on one side of the six sided handle.

L = 12” extended, 10-1/2 compressed. A 1-1/2” stroke. No special markings

L = 11-5/8 extended, 10’ compressed. A 1-5/8” stroke. No special markings

Flat on side of large section of handle, tine dia. 0.185", Large screw on end of handle to change spring or the pick. Small area of platting remains.

Comparison of two similar picks. The screw head on the platted pick is recessed and the other is protruding. The diameter of the pick on the platted pick is 0.25”, whereas the other is only 0.185”

Patent 23,969 Issued May 10,1895 - Variant

L – 13-3/4“, Compressed – 11-1/8”, Handle diameter – 1-1/8”,

Handle slides on pick – 2-5/8” stroke. Two holes in opposite sides of handle, at the base of the knob, to insert cotter pin in top if pick. Pick shaft diameter - 0.32".

L = 14-34” extended and 11-1/2” closed. A 3-1/4” stroke. Pick is 9-3/4” long a diameter of 0.37”. Brass handle is 5” long and 1” diameter. Markings near the top of the handles “4-20-20 (CDB)” and at the bottom of the handle “AJP ALOO1OO10P”. I don’t have the slightest idea of the meaning of the last set of characters!

L – 10-1/8”, Spring in the handle , Flat on Knob, Brass ferrule crimped on to retain the pick keeper, two hole in handle on opposite sides at the base of the knob, Compressed – 8-1/4”, stroke – 1-7/8”.

Cap Lifter on end of Handle

Patent. D43,278 Issued Nov. 26, 1912

L = 6-1/8”, Tool used to remove caps from mike bottle, bottle cap lifter and an ice pick. Marking – PATD 11-26-12 near the tip and HURON DAIRY PRODUCTS CO. HURON, SD PHONE 8169 on the flatten portion of the handle. Two tabs on the cap lifter.

L – 6-1/2” Tool used to remove caps from mike bottle, bottle cap lifter and an ice pick. Marking – PATD 11-26-12 near the tip and CO-OPERATIVE DAIRY, HYDE PK, 3106 on both sides of the handle in the flat area. Two tabs on the cap lifter.

PAT. 5-22-17 (Patent 1,226,827) on the double tabs top end of the cap lifter was for lifting crown caps, paper bottle lids and cut wire closure fastening rings. (Info provided by Bob Roger)

Patent data 11-26-12 is stamped on both sides of the flat area just above the pick. Also note the date is stamped along the pick, whereas, it is generally stamped across the pick.

L – 4-1/2”,

Patent date 11-26-12 is stamped across the area just above the pick on both sides. As can be seen the 11 is missing. There are no other markings on the flat area. There are two tabs on the cap lifter. The other side is smooth while the visible side has two 0.14" cylindrical protrusions about 1/32” high. Don’t know the reason for the small protrusion. It appears to be a manufacturing goof. The picture on the right shows the subject pick size compared with a more common pick.

L – 6-7/8”,

Patented 1-26-12 on both sides near the tip, BURR CREAMERY CORP on one side of handle & BURR'S CERTIFIED MILK on the other side. Large cap lifter with two tabs on top of handle.

L – 7-3/4”,

Bladed point with cap lifter and another cap lifter with one tab at end of handle, LITTLE ROCK BOTTLING CO. PHONE 4-1469 on one side of handle flat area and DRINK Dr. Pepper on other side of handle flat area. PAT APL'D FOR on the flat blade above the cap lifter.

L = 8-5/8”, Two piece construction and single tab in the cap lifter. Shorter body and longer pick. Body has larger diameter material. Markings – SUPERIOR ICE CO on one side and HOME OWNER – HOME OPERATED on the others side of the flattened area.

Flats on Two Sides

L = 8-7/8”, Flats on two sides to the end of the handle with SAVE WITH ICE PORT CITY ICE DELIVERY, PRESTON 5900 on both sides.

L = 8-7/8”, Flats on two sides to the end of the handle with Absopure ICE on both sides.

L = 7-5/8”, The ice pick has a cap lifter at the handle pick interface and cylindrical handle that has been flattened on two sides. Markings on the two sides: C. HOFFBERGER CO. 530 E. MONUMENT ST. on one side and SAVE WITH ICE on the other.

L = 6-3/8”, Mid section of two side of handle flattened. Markings – one side – PITTMANS & DEAN CO. and COAL AND ICE on the other side.

STERLING SILVER

L = 6-1/2”(Ice Pick), A Crest containing an H with the figure of a stag’s head above the cross bar and 1890 below the bar. “10” is stamped above the crest and STERLING below the crest on the handle near the pick, The cap lifter has the same markings.

L = 7” (Ice Pick), STERLING 4 on the side of both items pick and the cap lifter. A “V”

on the end of the cap lifter handle and an “A” on the end of the ice pick handle.

L = 5-1/2”, Sterling silver. MKG initials on end of handle.

L = 5-3/4”, Sterling silver, JFM initials on end of handle. Marking unreadable

L = 6-7/8”, “K” on end of the handle, STERLING and “10” stamped on the handle near the pick.

L = 8-5/8’’ STERLING HANDLE is marked on the crown of the handle. STAINLESS is stamped on the pick and it appears the pick screws into the handle.

L – 8-3/4”,Ornate design on both sides of handle at the ferrule, STAINLESS on the pick and STERLING HANDLE on the side of the handle. Part of a set that goes a with a cork screw.

Replaceable Picks

L = 6-1/8”, Flat on side of handle. Screw near pick end of handle to release and replace the tine. No special markings

L = 5-1/8”, ROYAL stamped on flat on handle. Screw on handle gives the ability to change the pick. Label on box PARKINSON’S ELECTRIC ROYAL ICE PICK – Providence RI

L – 5”, Handle max diameter – 1-34”,

ROYAL on side of flatten handle. Screw on handle to change picks. No apparent nickel coating.

L = 3”, OLD DOCTOR’S stamped on the flat on the side of the handle. Screw on handle gives the ability to change the pick. Label on box – ADJUSTABLE STEEL ICE PICK with a short poem.

L – 4-1/2”, DALLAS ICE & FUEL CO. on one side of handle and WAKEFIELD on the opposite side of the handle. 6 flats around the large diameter of the handle. Screw in the handle near the pick to replace the pick if necessary. Small traces of nickel plating remaining on top of the handle.

Mr. Robert Wakefield, great-grandson of an early president of Dallas Ice and Fuel Company, provided the following information:

Mr. Charles L. Wakefield moved from Chicago, where he worked for Chicago Telephone Company, to Dallas in 1893. In Dallas, he was involved in the development and construction of electrical line systems which included the construction of an electrical plant and an innovative two-phase electrical system for an ice plant. Charles eventually became president of the Dallas Ice and Fuel Company around the turn of the century and continued in the ice and electrical business until his death in 1938.

L – 6-7/8”, DASCO – 431 imprinted on one side of the handle and PAT. PENDING on the opposite side. Flat on opposite sides of the top flange of the handle. All steel.

L = 9-1/8”, SARGENT on one side of the handle and “20” on the other side. The opening in the handle is a cap lifter.

L = 7-1/4”, SARGENT on one side of the handle and “20” on the other side

L = 7-7/8”, BEACH on the face of the handle and a cap lifter configuration on the reverse.

L = 7-1/2”, BPOE 195 cut in top of handle.

L = 8”, ARCADE in raised letters on the top of the handle

L = 7”, ARCADE on the large flat on the handle. The knob handle has one large, two small and five medium flats around the large diameter.

L = 9-1/8”, No markings.

L = 8-5/8”, “Crown” symbol on end of handle. No other special markings

L = 6-1/4”, Torrington Ice Breaker on the handle. Six sided handle. Markings on the top of the box – TORRING ICE-BREAKER WITH THE COMPLIMENTS OF THE TORRINGTON COMPANY MAKERS OF “TORRINGTON NEEDLES”

L = 6-3/8”, light weight, hollow handle, Label inside box – MODERN design, ROSCO LINE Handy Dandy Ice Pick.

L – 6-1/2”, With the cover – 6-3/4”,

Protective copper case for the pick has a clip to attach to ones pocket. MORTON’S SALT IT POURS on the button clip.

L – 9-1/8”,

All metal pick with a multi-faceted knob head on the handle. It has a three sided tapering pick point. The ice pick weights a little over a pound and a half. Nickel coated. No markings.

L – 7-5/8”,

18G is stamped on the handle at the large diameter below the flat top. I think the handle is nickel plated. There is a small flat on side of top portion of handle and there is a reduction of 0.010" in the diameter of the pick about 1-3/4" from the handle.

L – 7”,

The eight sided handle is brass with nickel plating. The pick has an 0.25" diameter. No ferrule or markings.

L = 4-7/8”, ENGLAND is stamped on the end of the handle

L = 7-1/4”, The handle has a flat section to keep it from rolling. No special markings

L = 8-1/4” (top) & 7-1/2” (Bottom) they both have six sided handle and the bottom one has COLE stamped near the end of the handle.

L – 7-3/8”, Six sided handle. All metal. No markings. This tool came from my dad’s tool box. Don’t know if it was bought as an ice tool, but I would guess it was used as such sometime in the past.

L = 7-5/8”, Heavy rust pitting on the tine and some green paint still remains on the handle. No special markings

L – 8-1/2”, No markings.

L = 9-7/8”, Brass handle. No special markings

L = 9”, No special markings,

L – 9-1/4”, Cylinder handle, 0.56" diameter, with taper at the pick, no markings

L = 9-1/8, The handle is a bi-metal splice for high voltage electrical conductors. In other words another home made ice pick. Following markings found on the handle - FARGO 6SOL-8ST, CAT. #LS 6, PAT. NOS. 2041108, 2158892, & 2161694 for the splice not an ice pick.

L = 7-3/8”, STORZ stamped on the handle and STAINLESS 3/0 stamped on the pick near the handle. This may be a dental tool.

L – 3”(left), 3-1/4”(center), 3-1/16”(right),

The handle separates for storage of the five different tools; screw driver, tweezers, corkscrew, and gimlet, as shown below the center tool. The center tool has GERMANY stamped on one end of the handle, as shown to the right. The left tool has GERMANY stamped across one handle as shown to the left. The third (right) tool has no marking.

L = 5-1/2”, PHILADELHIA SHOE CO., 1549 FHILLMORE ST. SF. This made have been a button hook tool?

L – 5-7/8” The race track handle is 1-7/8” X 1” and the wire is 0.13” steel. The item appears to be rather light for an ice pick, but I’ll say it’s an ice pick until proven different.
